Citrus fruit Imports

In 2017, approx. 15M tonnes of citrus fruits were imported worldwide; shrinking by -6.1% against the previous year figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2007 to 2017; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2010, when import increased by 4% year-to-year. Over the period under review, citrus fruit imports attained its maximum volume of 16M tonnes in 2016, falling back in the following year.

In value terms, citrus fruit imports totaled $15B in 2017. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2007 to 2017; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations over the period under review. Over the period under review, citrus fruit imports attained its maximum level in 2017, and are likely to continue its growth in the immediate term.

Citrus fruit Imports By Country

The imports of the six major importers of citrus fruits, namely Russia, France, the Netherlands, Germany, the U.S., and the UK, represented more than third of total import. Italy (485K tonnes), Iraq (443K tonnes), Poland (442K tonnes), China, Hong Kong SAR (419K tonnes), Canada (401K tonnes), and Saudi Arabia (367K tonnes) occupied the weak share of total imports.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by China, Hong Kong SAR (+7.6% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest citrus fruit markets worldwide were France ($1.2B), the U.S. ($1.2B), and Germany ($1.2B), with a combined 25% share of global imports. These countries were followed by Russia, the Netherlands, the UK, Canada, China, Hong Kong SAR, Italy, Poland, Saudi Arabia and Iraq, which together accounted for a further 37%.

China, Hong Kong SAR (+10.6% per year) had the highest growth rate of imports, in terms of the main importing countries, over the last 10 years, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Citrus fruit Import Prices By Country

In 2017, the average import price for citrus fruits amounted to $990 per tonne, ascending by 10% against the previous year. Over the last ten years it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008, when import increased by 13% against the previous year level. Over the period under review, average import price for citrus fruit reached its maximum level in 2017, and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average import prices amongst major importing countries. In 2017, the country with the highest import price was Canada ($1,448 per tonne), while Iraq ($389 per tonne) was among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of import prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+6.5% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
